S.B. Samaratunga stands among the distinguished boxing talents produced by Royal College, Colombo-an athlete whose achievements left a lasting mark on schoolboy boxing in Sri Lanka. His career, defined by discipline, consistency, and exceptional skill, reflects the golden standards of the sport during the 1960s and early 1970s. Samaratunga's leadership and talent shone early when he captained the Royal College Boxing Team in 1967 and again in 1969, guiding his school through some of its most competitive years. His dominance inside the ring was equally remarkable; he became a five-time winner of the prestigious Stubbs Shield, while also finishing as runner-up once, a record that places him among the most successful Stubbs competitors of his era.

In 1970, Samaratunga further stamped his authority by clinching the Intermediates Championship, showcasing his mastery across multiple levels of competition. His skill and determination also earned him international recognition when he represented Ceylon Schools against the visiting Indian Schools team in 1965, an honour reserved for only the finest young boxers of the time.
