P. R. Ubewickrema
P. R. Ubewickrema is a distinguished boxer who proudly represented the Sri Lanka Navy and the nation with exceptional dedication and success. He served in the Navy from 30 August 1981 to 2 January 1992, completing over ten years of service while excelling in competitive boxing under the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka.
His boxing achievements began in 1977, winning the Albert Perera Memorial Boxing Meet (52½ kg) and securing runner-up positions at the Francis Jayawardena Memorial Boxing Meet in 1977 and 1979. In 1980, he won the T. B. Jayah Memorial Cup and the Francis Jayawardena Memorial Boxing Meet in the 115-120 Ibs category. Ubewickrema dominated Defence Services boxing, winning titles in 1982 and 1988, and emerged as a consistent National Champion between 1984 and 1988. He also won prestigious tournaments including the Clifford Cup and Layton Cup multiple times. On the international stage, he won Bronze Medals at the Nepal Third Invitational Boxing Meet (1986) and the 3rd SAF Games in Calcutta, India (1987). He concluded his competitive career by winning the 1st K.E.S.C. International Boxing Championship in 1990.
