His breakthrough came in 1974, when he clinched both the Novices Meet and the Stubbs Shield, marking him as a rising star. He continued his winning form with major victories at the SBASL Stubbs Shield Meet (1976), the SBASL Invitation Meet in Kandy (1977), and the Francis Jayawardene Memorial
