K. Upali Fernando

A Gritty Boxer, a True Leader, and a Fallen Hero

K. Upali Fernando stands tall in the annals of Sri Lankan boxing as a symbol of courage, discipline, and selfless service. A proud product of Thurstan College, Upali Fernando was known not only for his fighting spirit inside the ring but also for his unwavering commitment to the nation beyond it.

Upali Fernando captained the Thurstan College Boxing Team in 1974, a period during which the college boxing program saw significant regrouping and revival under his leadership. As captain, he inspired his teammates through example-combining grit, resilience, and sportsmanship. His leadership played a key role in restoring Thurstan College's presence in competitive school boxing. At his very first Stubbs Shield Boxing Championship, Upali Fernando made an immediate impact by advancing to the finals. In a closely contested bout, he narrowly lost to an experienced champion boxer, earning admiration from officials and spectators alike for his determination and technical skill. Even in defeat, his performance marked him as a boxer of exceptional promise. Following his school boxing career, Upali Fernando joined the Sri Lanka Police, where he continued to serve the sport with distinction. He represented the Sri Lanka Police Boxing Team and competed at a high level in national competitions. At the ABA Novices, he was adjudged the Best Loser after a stiff and courageous contest against champion boxer Samsudeen of Zahira College, further cementing his reputation as a fearless and determined competitor. However, duty to country eventually took precedence over sport. With his gradual induction into the Special Task Force (STF), operational responsibilities forced Upali Fernando to step away from competitive boxing. Though his gloves were set aside, his fighting spirit never faded. Upali Fernando's life was tragically cut short during his final assignment in Ampara, Kokadicholai, where he was killed in action after being caught in an LTTE firefight. He made the ultimate sacrifice in service of Sri Lanka, laying down his life for the safety and unity of the nation.

K. Upali Fernando will always be remembered as more than a boxer. He was a leader, a patriot, and a hero-someone who fought bravely both inside the ring and on the battlefield. The Ceylon Boxing Federation honors his legacy with deep respect and gratitude, ensuring that future generations remember his courage, commitment, and sacrifice.
