DIG Jayakumar Thangavelu (Rtd.)
DIG Jayakumar Thangavelu (Rtd.), fondly known as "Thanga", is one of the most respected and formidable figures in Sri Lankan boxing history. His character, discipline, and leadership were deeply shaped by the sport, which he embraced from a young age and served with distinction throughout his life.
Educated at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, he began boxing at the age of 14 and captained the college boxing team at just 15. Competing across several weight divisions, he brought honour to his school and represented Sri Lanka Schools against India for three consecutive years, establishing himself as an outstanding schoolboy boxer. Joining the Sri Lanka Police, DIG Thangavelu continued his boxing career with remarkable success. He won the Police Best Boxer title on numerous occasions and captured four National Boxing Titles, earning a reputation as a much-feared competitor. A notable highlight came in 1983 when, even at the age of 35, he competed in the Inter-Divisional Meet, helped the CID team win the Dowbiggin Cup for the first time, and secured the Best Boxer Award His service to boxing extended beyond the ring. From 1989 to 1994, he coached the Police boxing team, transforming young and inexperienced officers into national-level contenders. He later served as Treasurer and President of the Sri Lanka Amateur Boxing Association (SLABA), where he emphasized discipline, fairness, and athlete-focused administration. DIG Jayakumar Thangavelu also contributed as a Referee and Judge at national and international levels, becoming an Asian-level Judge and a member of the International Boxing Jury, widely admired for his integrity and commitment to fair play.
