Daminda Walisundara
Born on 27 July 1978, Darninda Walisundara is a highly accomplished Sri Lankan boxer who competed in the orthodox stance and made a lasting impact at school, club, national, and international levels. He represented Vidyartha College, Kandy, Vidyartha Boxing Club, and later the Sri Lanka Police Boxing Club, beginning his boxing journey in 1989. A dominant force in junior boxing, Darminda won multiple Stubbs Shield and Junior National Championship titles and was named Junior Best Boxer in 1993. In 1995, he captained the Vidyartha College Boxing Team, guiding the team to a historic treble by winning the L. V. Jayaweera Memorial Cup, Stubbs Shield, and Junior National Championships.
In 1996, he earned national recognition by winning the prestigious Colonel T. Y. Wright Challenge Trophy as the Most Scientific Boxer, while also securing victories at junior national level. Internationally, Daminda captained the Sri Lanka Junior Team, represented the country at the KPT Cup in Pakistan (1996), and won a Bronze Medal at the Adajaniya Cup International Tournament in India (1997).
At senior national level, he was a consistent medalist in the Bantamweight division, achieving multiple silver medals at National Championships and National Sports Games, before crowning his career with a Gold Medal in the Lightweight category at the 2006 National Sports Games. Daminda Walisundara's boxing career reflects technical excellence, leadership, and unwavering commitment, securing him a respected place in Sri Lanka's boxing legacy.
