A Lifetime Dedicated to Sri Lankan Boxing

W. V. S. J. Sumanaweera stands as one of Sri Lanka's most respected boxing personalities, a sportsman whose achievements span competitive excellence, international representation, and more than three decades of dedicated coaching. His boxing journey began during his school years, where he quickly made a mark by competing in boxing meets organised by the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA). In 1973, he emerged as a notable contender at the T. B. Jaya Memorial Boxing Tournament, and the same year he became Runners-Up at the prestigious Stubbs Shield, while also winning several inter-school tournaments. At the ABA Novices, he was recognised as the Best Loser, an early indication of his grit and potential in the ring. Progressing into senior competition, Sumanaweera enjoyed remarkable success. He won all senior tournaments he competed in, defeating several national champions along the way. His international exposure further enhanced his reputation when he faced some of the best Indian boxers, including four top-ranked fighters. One of his most memorable international bouts was a closely fought contest against Sergeant B. S. Thapa of India, where he narrowly lost on points.

A highlight of his competitive career was the honour of representing Sri Lanka four times in international boxing, a testament to his consistency and elite standard. He earned Colours in Boxing at Schools, Police, and National (Sri Lanka) levels, reflecting excellence across multiple institutions and stages of his career.

After an illustrious period as a boxer, W. V. S. J. Sumanaweera devoted himself to coaching, shaping generations of boxers with discipline, technical knowledge, and sportsmanship. With over 30 years of service as a boxing coach, he has contributed significantly to institutions such as YMCA Kandy, D. S. Senanayake College - Kandy, Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Enginees (SLME), and the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) of the Sri Lanka Army. His expertise also took him overseas, where he toured India and Malaysia, gaining valuable international exposure that further enriched his coaching career. W. V. S. J. Sumanaweera's legacy is one of unwavering commitment to the sport of boxing. As a fierce competitor, national representative, and mentor to countless young boxers, his contribution to Sri Lankan boxing remains enduring and deeply respected.
