Tyrone Smith

A Legacy of Leadership, Skill, and Sportsmanship in Schoolboy Boxing

The Ceylon Boxing Federation proudly recognises Tyrone Smith, a distinguished former schoolboy boxer whose achievements during the late 1970s and early 1980s reflect a period of discipline, resilience, and sporting excellence in Sri Lankan boxing. Mr. Smith's boxing journey began in 1977 at Trinity College, Kandy, when the school entered a strong contingent of boxers for a meet organised by the Central Province Boxing Association. Demonstrating exceptional talent and composure at a young age, he captured the Featherweight Title, marking an impressive start to his competitive career.

Although Trinity College did not participate in competitive boxing from 1977 to 1979, Mr. Smith returned to the ring with renewed determination in 1980, representing his alma mater at two prestigious tournaments the L. V. Jayaweera Challenge Cup and the T. B. Jayah Memorial Cup-finishing as Runner-up at both events. His performances during this period reflected both technical growth and competitive maturity. The year 1981 stands out as a defining chapter in his boxing career. Appointed Captain of the Trinity College Boxing Team, Mr. Smith led by example, combining leadership with ring intelligence. His achievements that year included:

  • Most Scientific Boxer Trinity Open Boxing Meet
  • Runner-up-T. B. Jayah Memorial Cup
  • Runner-up-Stubbs Shield

Significantly, he holds the honour of being the first boxer to captain Trinity College to the Stubbs Shield after a lapse of 29 years, a milestone that restored pride and visibility to Trinity boxing.

In 1982, Smith once again demonstrated leadership beyond school boundaries when he was selected to Captain the Outstation Schools Team against Colombo Schools. This historic encounter marked the revival of a prestigious meet after more than three decades. Though the team was declared Runner-up under unfortunate circumstances, the experience stood as a testament to sportsmanship, perseverance, and acceptance-values that continue to define true champions. Throughout his career, Tyrone Smith exemplified the ideals of boxing: discipline, respect, resilience, and hurnility. His journey remains an important part of Sri Lanka's schoolboy boxing heritage and serves as an inspiration to future generations.
