A Distinguished Figure in Sri Lankan Schools' Boxing

Ajith Bopitiya was a distinguished figure in Sri Lankan schools' boxing, demonstrating success as an elite unbeaten competitor. His competitive career spanned the late 1970s and early 1980s, where he represented Royal College, Colombo, and his first inter-school meet was the T. B. Jayah Memorial Cup Meet in 1978. He emerged as awinner in the Extra Heavy weight class. He then went onto become the winner in the Stubbs' Shield Championship Meet in the same year. Ajith Captained the Royal College Boxing team in the year 1979/80 and represented the college at the Stubb’s Shield Meet, becoming the Winner in the same weight class in 1979 as well. He represented the Royal College Boxing team in 1980 at the Francis Jayawardene Memorial Boxing Meet and emerged as the winner in the under 135 lbs weight class and was the winner in the Extra Heavy Weight 'B' weight class at the Royal College vs S.B.A.S.L. President's Team Meet in the same year. On the 2nd of August 1980, he was awarded "Best Boxer" at the Sri Lanka Amateur Boxing Association "Novices Boxing Meet", winning the Welterweight class. Having left the school, he joined the Colombo YMCA Boxing team and represented it at the Clifford Cup Boxing Meet in 1980, where he was the runner-up in the welterweight class. Following his competitive years, he continued his commitment to the sport by becoming an Accredited Referee/Judge of the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka in 1993.
